Aimee McPherson marries a third time – Sept. 13, 1931
This week marks the anniversary of when Aimee Semple McPherson, the popular yet controversial Pentecostal preacher, got married for the third time.
McPherson, a divorcee who was 40 at the time, married David L. Hutton, a 30-year-old cabaret performer and member of the choir at her prominent church, the Angelus Temple.

The decision to remarry while her ex-husband was still alive incurred scandal at the Temple, which adhered to tenets that prohibited members from remarrying under such circumstances.
“Two days after the wedding, Hutton was sued for alienation of affections by Hazel St. Pierre. Though Hutton claimed not to know the woman, he settled the suit for $5,000,” noted a website dedicated to McPherson’s memory.
The couple divorced soon after in January 1934, with Hutton suing McPherson over allegations that he was wrongfully fired from his position as business manager at the Temple.
